The Big-Picture Three-Act Outline
Before planning chapters one by one, let's shape the whole story into three big movements: the setup, the deepening, and the resolution.
Act One — the setup
Act One introduces your main characters and their ordinary lives, brings them together (or back together), and ends with a choice or event that locks them into the story. By the end of it, the reader should know who these people are, feel the first spark or friction, and understand why walking away isn't simple.
The inciting incident — the phone call, the arrival, the will reading, the new boss.
The moment they can no longer avoid each other: she takes the job, he signs the contract, the fake engagement is announced.
Act Two — the deepening
The long, delicious middle. The relationship grows through closeness and setbacks while everything gets more complicated. Somewhere near the middle comes a shift — the midpoint — after which the emotional risks are higher and the old defenses stop working. Act Two ends as things head toward the major crisis.
Often a point of no return: a first kiss, a confession, a secret revealed, a line crossed.
The calm before the storm — "maybe this can work after all..."
Act Three — the resolution
The crisis lands, the truth comes out, and each character has to actually change — not just say so, but prove it with action. Act Three resolves the outside problem, repairs or seals the relationship, and delivers the emotional promise the whole book has been making.
Words are cheap in Act Three. What do they do?
The feeling you named back in Section 2 — this is where you pay it off.
Your plot board
Now place your story's key moments on the board. Add events to each act, tag them as romance, plot, or character moments, connect them to your characters, and move them around until the shape feels right. This board becomes the backbone of your chapter outline in Section 10.
